In the realm of technology, the capacity of storage plays a vital role, especially in portable drives. Western Digital, a renowned brand in data storage solutions, has once again set new standards with their latest release. The WD portable spicy drives have always been a popular choice for individuals seeking reliable and high-capacity storage on the go. With the introduction of the new 6TB models, WD has taken it up a notch. These drives not only offer impressive storage capacity but also come with a range of features that set them apart from the competition. Let’s delve deeper into what makes these new WD portable spicy drives exceptional.
Western Digital’s 5TB My Passport Ultra has been a top choice for those in need of large-capacity portable storage, and the company recently unveiled the first significant update to their HDD lineup in years. While SSDs have become more common, HDDs still provide vast amounts of affordable storage. Western Digital’s portable 2.5-inch HDDs are now available in 6TB versions, making them the highest-capacity portable HDDs currently on the market.
The company offers the new 6TB capacity in seven variants, including the My Passport, My Passport Ultra, Mac editions of both, the USB-C My Passport, the WD_Black P10 Game Drive, and the G-Drive ArmorATD. These drives share similar specifications with minor connectivity and compatibility differences.
The Ultra editions come with USB-C connectivity out-of-the-box, along with bi-directional USB-C cables for a $20 premium compared to the regular models. While only a few models are labeled for Mac, all the drives are compatible with macOS. The Windows versions may need formatting to work on Macs, but using the Mac editions on Windows just requires downloading an HFS driver. The USB-C version supports all three operating systems and comes pre-formatted to exFAT.
The Game Drive supports Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series consoles, allowing users to install and run PS4 and Xbox One games directly from the drive. With 6TB of storage, users can store and transfer multiple modern games without the need to re-download them.
The SanDisk Extreme G-Drive ArmorATD is the most expensive model due to its rugged exterior, Thunderbolt 3 compatibility, and two included cables. It supports macOS out of the box and can be reformatted for use on Windows.
All the 6TB drives offer approximately 130MB/s sequential read performance and a 5Gb/s transfer rate. The 6TB My Passport and My Passport for Mac are priced at $184.99, while the Game Drive and USB-C variant are $189.99. The Ultra editions cost $204.99, and the ArmorATD is priced at $229.99. Cheaper versions of these drives are also available with 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, or 5TB storage options.
